Rack Room and Blue Bar

You’d think a place that combines a laid-back pool room with a high-energy watering hole might cause some confusion in its mission. But after a few drinks at Midtown staple Rack Room Blue Bar, it all becomes very clear. Just quit thinking and give it up to the good times.

For the bar game set, head up front, where it’s all pool, video games and tunes from the jukebox. Pool is free every night before 7 p.m., so sidle up with the rest of the after-work crowd to secure a game. The environs are a little shabby, but that all adds to the character. And you won’t feel quite so guilty if you spill your Silver Bullet on these tables.

If you need a reprieve from the gaming, head to the back. That space will also be packed back,  with Vandy kids mixing it up with young professionals and even a few serious biker dudes. If it’s too busy in both spots, hang out in the long, mosaic-tiled hallway or even pop into the little phone booth room if you really need a breather.

Drinks are stiff, but so are the prices — think $7 for a Jack and Coke. But that’s what happy hours were made for, and if you catch Blue Bar’s you’re looking at 2-for-1 specials during the week.

Music lovers can even get down on a solid rotation of DJs and singer-songwriter nights. And though it may all sound a little schizophrenic, there’s a reason this spot has so much staying power. You just can’t deny the good times.
