Rumba mixes a mean drink
By Graham Griffith
To spice up your love life, look to West End staple Rumba. A perennial favorite for its boisterous patio and unique Latin/Caribbean cuisine, the dimly lit bar and restaurant provides an ideal setting for a romantic evening.
Though it can be quiet during the week, which can be nice on a lazy Sunday, expect a more effervescent atmosphere on Cupid's special day. Most weekends it can be difficult to find an available seat at the S-shaped silver bar. Luckily, there's often room to mingle in the lounge area among the diverse clientele (from hipsters to middle-age couples), many of whom know the lively, amiable bartenders by name.
Although the lighting sets an intimate mood, the decor and the world music soundtrack tend to mirror the upbeat attitude of the black-clad wait staff. Flat-screen TVs share space on the bright-red walls behind the bar with colorful works of art, but the focus is definitely the drinks.
Rumba is famous for its hand-muddled mojitos (the bartenders have perfected the delicate balance of mint, lime and sugar), and the zesty cocktail menu features several unusual options. A splash of sparkling wine sweetens up the popular Miami mojito, while the refreshing mango mojito features flavored Cruzan rum with just the right amount of soda.
One issue of note among my party: Gentlemen are required to remove their hats. Though the vibe is more casual than more see-and-be-seen alternatives, this aspect of the relaxed dress code was unpopular.
