Byrd's Eye View: Katy Perry at Cannery Ballroom

Katy Perry wants you to know she's just a normal girl. A normal girl with an affinity for larger-than-life flashy fruit and a career singing catchy pop tunes, maybe, but a normal girl nonetheless.

Perry rolled back into Nashville this week. She spent several years here as a teenager pursuing a gospel career as Katy Hudson and learning how to write music and play the guitar.

Several times she proclaimed herself thrilled to be here, and she was well received. The sold-out crowd of college kids started lining up in front of the venue at 4 p.m. for the chance to be front and center to bop to Perry's hits "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl," which were backed by a giant, inflatable cat with glowing eyes that goes by the name "Kitty Purry."

But the audience got more than just her hits. They were also treated to a wobbly performance of Perry doing the hokey pokey and a cover of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" both of which were pulled off pleasantly thanks to Katy's quirky je ne sais quoi.
