Byrd's Eye View: The 5 Spot
So, I’m a little late on this one, but for more than three months, The 5 Spot on the east side has been hosting a weekly Monday night gig known as, according to owner Todd Sherwood, “Keep on Movin.’” DJs Jacob Jones and Reno Bo take turns playing old Motown tunes, '50s and '60s rock & roll, soul, doo-wop, garage and girl groups. It’s the kind of stuff that gets me moving while I’m cleaning the house in my pjs on a Sunday morning that I’m not afraid to belt out loud even if I’m not home alone. Yeah, it’s get-the-darn-thing-done kind of good. Needless to say, this event has become pretty popular with the Eastside crew. I popped by last week to find the joint completely packed with bodies pressed against each other in every nook and cranny. I felt like Baby in Dirty Dancing having just discovered the secret employees-only after work jamboree. (Yes, I said jamboree.) It was sizzling! Although let me add a word to the wise, if you’re not a fan of cigarette smoke, then you might want to steer clear. In a venue this size, they don’t call it hot boxing for nothing.
