A performer at the Grand Ole Opry for more than 40 years, the "Texas Troubadour" broadcast his own radio show, Midnight Jamboree, after the Opry ended. He also owned the Ernest Tubb Record Shop. His voice changed drastically after a mid-career tonsillectomy.
