"40 Candles"
Original: In quintessential ’80s teen farce “Sixteen Candles,”
Sam (Molly Ringwald), Farmer Ted (Anthony Michael Hall) and dreamboat
Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) endure the many rigors of adolescence.
The sequel:
“The Big Chill” as envisioned by Judd Apatow. Screwball antics ensue
when the original cast reunites at the funeral of Jake Ryan, tragically
killed in a car crash. (In real life Schoeffling now makes furniture in
Pennsylvania, so his character only appears in flashbacks.) Divorcée
Sam has a teen daughter of her own and the father is—wait for
it!—Farmer Ted.
All your favorite co-stars are back, including
John and Joan Cusack, Haviland “the hot blonde popular chick” Morris,
Jami Gertz and Brian Doyle-Murray. Gedde Watanabe reprises his role as
popular-but-politically-incorrect Asian stereotype Long Duk Dong and
utters a variation on a classic line: “He getting buried... BURIED!”
