It's no secret that MUTEMATH has a celebrated live show. Heck, Alternative Press went so far as to call the synthed-out New Orleans rockers "the No. 1 band you need to see live before you die."

Still, for all the acrobatic rock fun had on stage, the road, it turns out, isn't the best place for the band members to write their material.

They learned this the hard way as they prepared to record the follow-up to their acclaimed 2006 debut, eventually deciding to scrap the songs they'd written on tours over the last three years and start from scratch — with added emphasis on collaboration.

The result is Armistice, a bold and broad effort that throws surprising amounts of grit and soul onto their formerly immaculate space rock sound. Live, they're reinterpreting the studio-bred tunes to mesh with their sweat-soaked performance style.

7 p.m. Sun., Nov. 8, War Memorial Auditorium (301 Sixth Ave. N., 255-2787), $25
