Various artists, Elvis Presley Christmas Duets
It's fitting, rock's King celebrating the birth of a king. Whether it's fitting to pull recordings of Presley's voice into "duets" with pop and contemporary country stars, however, is up to the fans. As a piece of listening, it's hard to go wrong weaving Presley's soulful depth in "Blue Christmas" with country lovely Martina McBride's crystal delivery, or mixing his strutting call with Gretchen Wilson's bluesy grit on "Merry Christmas Baby." The tone is true-blue classic, piano plinks and choir coos forming a fittingly celebratory sonic bed. It may be a polarizing concept, this sort of thing, but these artists celebrate both Kings honorably. (With a particular nod to Carrie Underwood, who harmonizes with Presley like she was born to on "I'll Be Home for Christmas.")
