Ani DiFranco, ‘Which Side Are You On?’
Due out: Jan. 17
The indie goddess’ first album since 2008’s “Red Letter Year” continues in that record’s musically eclectic vein, with members of the Neville Brothers, Galactic and Norah Jones’ band helping DiFranco add touches of New Orleans parade jazz (“If Yr Not”) and reggae (the pro-ganja “J”) to her stripped-down folk/punk sound. Motherhood has mellowed the 41-year-old singer-songwriter, but only a little; she still sprinkles this set with a few furious polemics, including the women’s rights anthem “Amendment” and the scathing title track, an up-to-the-minute rewrite of a classic pro-union song made famous by Pete Seeger.
