Christina Aguilera (and Alicia Keys, songwriter), ‘Impossible’ / Aretha Franklin, ‘Ain't No Way’
At the 2011 Grammy Awards, a disparate fleet of female vocalists, ranging from Florence Welch to Martina McBride to Jennifer Hudson, opened the show with an Aretha Franklin tribute medley. Franklin (right) was recovering from an undisclosed illness at the time and not in attendance. But we’d loved to have seen the Queen of Soul’s reaction as the Grammy medley shifted into a Christina Aguilera-sung snippet of “Ain’t No Way.” This is because Aguilera’s 2002 track “Impossible,” co-written with Alicia Keys, significantly apes the 1968 Franklin B-side.
