Super Bowl XXXVI (2002)
Lineup: U2
Location: New Orleans, La.
Theme: Tribute to 9/11 Victims
Irish rockers U2 brought out the hits and the hearts (their stage was literally heart-shaped) for this halftime performance-cum-tribute to the victims of 9/11. They started with “Beautiful Day,” segued into “Pride (In the Name of Love),” and concluded with a heartstring-pulling rendition of “Where the Streets Have No Name,” played while the names of the 9/11 victims scrolled on a video banner. To cap the ceremony, frontman Bono opened his coat to reveal an American flag lining.
