Cyndi Lauper, 'She's So Unusual'
It’s safe to assume Epic Records had big things in mind for Cyndi Lauper (her 1983 rookie solo LP was released on Epic’s sister imprint, Portrait Records), since high-priced glitterati photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the front and back cover. The latter is an arty ant’s-eye view of Lauper’s high heels, which have Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painted on the soles. The Coney Island “Wonder Wheel” features prominently in the background. Although her star has faded somewhat over the years, Lauper was white-hot after the release of “She’s So Unusual,” becoming the first female artist to have four top five hits from a single album: “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night.” Art director Janet Perr won a Grammy for her work on the album’s packaging.
