HOT DOGS

The Dog of Nashville

2127 Belcourt Ave.

Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily

Contact: 292-2204 or www.the
dogofnashville.com

Highlights: Try the Fiery Redneck - a hotdog wrapped in bacon and smothered in cheese, jalapenos, mustard, chili and onions. Yes, Chicago fans, they do have poppy seed buns. And just about anything else you might consider putting on a dog. Veggie dogs available.

Hot Diggity Dog

614 Ewing Ave.

Hours: 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri.; 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sat.

Contact: 255-3717 or www.hot
diggitydogstn.com

Highlights: They come very close to the real Chicago dog here - all-beef wiener, neon-green relish, mustard, sport peppers, tomatoes, the works. No poppy seed bun, though. Fries are highly recommended. Veggie dogs available.

I Dream of Weenie

1108 Woodland St.

Contact: 226- 2622

Hours: 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon.-Sat., noon-5 p.m. Sun.

Highlights: Lots of options for vegetarians, buns baked by local Charpier's Bakery, a cool location in a converted VW bus tucked between an art gallery and an antiques shop. The dogs come in fun varieties including a pimiento cheese dog and the much-beloved, celery salt-salted Chicago dog.

Zackie's

1201 Fifth Ave. N.

Hours: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Mon.-Fri.; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat.

Contact: 291-8311

Highlights: One of the best things about Zackie's is the build-your-own atmosphere. You get to control the toppings that go on, the amount, and even the order they go on. Not that some people are picky about their hotdogs.

COOL TREATS

Bobbie's Dairy Dip

5301 Charlotte Ave.

Hours: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon.; 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tue.-Thurs.; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sat.; noon-9 p.m. Sun.

Contact: 463-8088

Highlights: Expanded outdoor seating this year makes Bobbie's twice as appealing. On a sultry summer evening there are fewer better places to be than trying to eat your chocolate-dipped soft-serve vanilla cone before it melts down over your fist. The free water cooler outdoors is a nice touch.

Mike's Ice Cream Fountain

208 Broadway

Hours: 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.; 8 a.m.-midnight Fri.; 9 a.m.-midnight Sat.; 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.

Contact: 742-6453 or www.mikesicecream.com

Highlights: You can get your sugar buzz and your caffeine fix at the same time, since the place doubles as a coffee shop. Other than that, it's old-school ice cream, with lots of childhood favorites that you can take with you and enjoy on a stroll over the Shelby Pedestrian Bridge.

Elliston Place Soda Shop

2111 Elliston Place

Hours: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Sat.

Contact: 327-1090

Highlights: The absolute best sort of throwback '50s dinner food (and if you're not in a cheeseburger sort of mood you can go for the wildly popular turkey and dressing). But the hand-made milkshakes are to die for, big enough to share and do not miss the butterscotch.

Fleur de Lis Flavors

900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.

Nashville Farmers Market

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri.; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat.; 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sun.

Contact: 351-6109 or www.fdlflavors.com

Highlights: One of a few spots that have brought New Orleans-style snowballs to Nashville - they're sort of a ramped-up snow-cone. Shaved ice instead of crushed, and so many toppings you could eat there every day for a month and still not try them all.

Las Paletas

2905 12th Ave. S.

Hours: noon-6 p.m. Tues.-Sat. [summer hours start the first week of June: noon-7 p.m. Tues.-Sat.; noon-6 p.m. Sun.

Contact: 386-2101 or www.wheresthesign.com

Highlights: Oh, mami, these Mexican-style popsicles are good. Handmade in a rotating roster of flavors such as rose petal, tamarind, pineapple chili and avocado. You can also get coconut, chocolate raspberry, banana or the like if you're happier with a more conventional 'sicle.

Pied Piper Creamery

114 S. 11th St.

Hours: noon-8 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.; noon-9 p.m. Fri.-Sat.;
1-8 p.m. Sun.

Contact: 227-4114 or www.thepiedpipercreamery.com

Highlights: We love the names of the ice cream flavors such as "Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana?" and "Mocha Chocolatta Ya Ya." Luckily the ice cream is as delicious as it is creative, probably because it's handmade with fresh ingredients.
