Hog Heaven

pick Hog Heaven

115 27th Ave. N. - Nashville
615-329-1234

An amazing little place at the edge of Centennial Park, this barbecue joint sports beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey, chicken and even ribs. For a treat, get a pulled pork sandwich with the famous white sauce and see if you don't lick the plate clean. For a non-traditional sandwich, try the pork or chicken on cornbread with some slaw on top. If you want, they can bring the pig to you and some friends, or cater a dinner party or luncheon of just about any size.

Jack's Bar-B-Que

Jack's Bar-B-Que

416 Broadway - Nashville
615-254-5715

When you're after some serious barbecue, look for the sign with the flying pigs. Here at Jack's, which originally started on Broadway a few decades back, you can gnaw on some of the finest ribs around or go whole hog and load up a combo plate with beef brisket, pork shoulder and the delicious St. Louis-style ribs. Smoked chicken and Texas sausage are also good bets. Top it off with beans, slaw and potato salad.

B&C Market BBQ

900 Rosa L Parks Blvd., inside the Farmers Market - Nashville
615-770-0032

If you have a hankering for pulled pork or a steaming side of corn pudding, you have to try B&C Market BBQ. Indulge in a plate of succulent swine over garlic grits, which comes with two sides, or a pile of smoked salmon, which is only there until it's gone, so come early. Unique sides go beyond the typical baked beans, although they have those too, but you have to try the chipotle corn salad. For dessert, nibble on a pack of Oreo truffles, diet be darned.

Famous Dave's

Famous Dave's

7086 Bakers Bridge Road - Franklin
615-778-1227

While the over use of the word "famous" can get a little old, the variety of barbecued meats and the size of the platters at Famous Dave's don't. This chain restaurant offers plenty of flair and flame-licked favorites like barbecued chicken and Texas beef brisket. The roadhouse decor complements the picnic food presentation. Each table is set with a roll of paper towels and five bottles of barbecue sauce. Stay clear of the Devil's Spit unless you like burned taste buds.

Jim 'N Nick's

7004 Charlotte Pike - Nashville
615-352-5777

With black-and-white photos of Southern life and vintage advertisements adorning the walls, Jim 'N Nick's is a laid-back hotspot of Southern-style barbecue. They offer catering and buffet-style eating for parties over 20, but your best option is probably to dine in, either at a booth inside or on the covered patio on a picnic bench. The barbeque is delicious, of course, but also look into their coleslaw, worthy of any summer day, and their cheese biscuits, a favorite of regulars.

Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint

pick Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint

7215 Nolensville Road - Nolensville
615-776-1856

This Nolensville spot has a fervent following, thanks to the succulent brisket and juicy ribs. The pulled pork has a wonderful smoky flavor and sides are basic but very good. An outdoor deck beckons people to hunker down over a rack of ribs and go to town on the meat. Their Redneck Taco, which is really a hoecake, is a must-try, and has drawn diners from all over thanks to a mention on Gourmet.com.

Carl's Perfect Pig Bar B Que & Grill

Carl's Perfect Pig Bar B Que & Grill

4991 Highway 70 E - White Bluff
615-797-4020

Carl's Perfect Pig is a pink little runt of a restaurant about 30 minutes west of Nashville off Highway 70. it's worth the drive to sink your choppers into their lean, moist pulled pork and heavenly ribs. Burgers are also a good bet if you're in the mood for some beef. Seating is crammed as all get-out, but once you get to eating, the outside world seems to melt away.
