5. 'The X-Files': Home

The ominous banjo plucks from “Deliverance” aren’t the only bits of pop culture that keep millions weary of backwoods America. “The X-Files” tried its hand at the villainous side effects of inbreeding for the 1996 episode “Home” in which Mulder and Scully stumble onto the deformed Peacock family. Murder, amputations and some serious Oedipal issues ensue. “Home” ended up being so disturbing, Fox vowed to never air it again, until they broke their word for a 1999 Halloween special.
